Prisoners clash in Cipinang jail

JAKARTA (JP): Four prisoners have been taken for questioning after a fight between two groups of prisoners left two injured in Cipinang prison, East Jakarta.

The fight began Friday afternoon when four prisoners attacked three fellow inmates.

Witnesses said Aris, the ringleader, Iskandar, Laude and Amiruddin in Block A threw stones at a Block BT cell containing Galil Pribadi, Dharmawanto and another inmate before the fight began.

Galil, 34, and Dharmawanto, 37, were stabbed in the head and shoulders during the fight. They were taken to the Kramat Jati police hospital, East Jakarta.

City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said Saturday that police had seized two knives as evidence.

"Aris and his three friends denied the allegation that they stabbed the two victims with knives," he said.

Aritonang said the police were still investigating the cause of the fight, which reportedly reflected the disappointment of some prisoners over the election of a new foreman for Block A. (cst)
