Unibank to sell 70m new shares JAKARTA (JP): Unibank, a banking arm of the Garuda Mas business group, plans to offer 70 million new shares to strengthen its capital structure. U.S. banks subpoenaed WASHINGTON (Reuter): The Senate committee investigating possible wrongdoing in fundraising for President Clinton's re- election campaign said Wednesday it had issued 14 subpoenas for contributors' bank records. The subpoenas went to 14 banks including the Lippo Bank. The Indonesian Lippo Group has been at the heart of fund-raising inquiry. The subpoenas brought to 77 the total number issued so for by the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee.

BI pursues electronic clearing, joint ATMs JAKARTA (JP): Bank Indonesia, the central bank, will introduce an electronic clearing system later this year and a single joint Automated Teller Machine (ATM) system next year to improve payment system efficiency. Central bank sources said yesterday the electronic clearing system would, during the first stage, cover only 40 commercial banks in Jakarta where clearing volume and value had risen drastically in recent years.

Vita Daya's power plant SEMARANG (JP): PT Vita Daya Harapan plans to build a power plant, with an 100-megawatt (MW) capacity, in Bawen, near Semarang, Central Java. The company, equally owned by PT Van Der Horst Indonesia (VDHI), PT Asia East Power and PT APAC, will spend about US$100 million on the plant. VDHI's president Hadi Sutanto said here yesterday that the plant would be constructed in two stages and that the first stage was scheduled for completion in 1998.
