U.S. banks subpoenaed
WASHINGTON (Reuter): The Senate committee investigating possible wrongdoing in fundraising for President Clinton's re- election campaign said Wednesday it had issued 14 subpoenas for contributors' bank records.
The subpoenas went to 14 banks including the Lippo Bank. The Indonesian Lippo Group has been at the heart of fund-raising inquiry. The subpoenas brought to 77 the total number issued so for by the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee.
The committee said the subpoenas were for documents relating to bank records of "some individuals and entities whose previous contributions to the Democratic National Committee have been returned, or whose contributions raised questions concerning the source of funds."
