Mayor dismisses lawsuit as irrational JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Mayor Pardjoko has said through a spokesman that the law suit filed against him by a trader over land appropriation in Srengseng Sawah, South Jakarta, was irrational. Mayoralty spokesman Djabintang Siboro questioned how the trader, Henry M. Ali, determined the price of the land. "How can the price he proposed in 1990 be the same as the current price," Djabintang told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Thai central bank warns of foreign debt BANGKOK (Reuter): The central Bank of Thailand (BOT) said yesterday it was concerned about a sharp rise in foreign borrowings, especially by the nation's private sector. "We must start to be careful about the creation of foreign debts in the future," said BOT economist, Bandid Nijathaworn. He told a news conference Thailand's foreign debts at the end of last year totaled 82.6 billion baht (US$3.30 billion) compared with a mere 37.9 billion baht in 1991.

Obituary
Obituary Retired police general Roekmini Koesoemo Astoeti Soedjono, a member of the National Commission on Human Rights, died of cancer complications late Monday. She was 58. Survived by her husband, Mas Soedjono, and four children, Roekmini died at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital around 11:00 p.m. She had been treated for a month for cancer of the throat which had spread. Roekmini was an outspoken former legislator of the Armed Forces (ABRI) faction.

Deported boy leaves for S'pore SURABAYA: Four-year-old Andreya Masaru Miyakoshi and his Indonesian mother, Atik Kristia Yuliani, flew to Singapore yesterday where they are to stay two days before returning to Indonesia. Andreya, born a Japanese citizen because of the citizenship of his father, Mitsuo Miyakoshi, was deported for overstaying his visa by more than seven months. Andreya's visa expired in May.

ACeS to sign deal with Russian firm
ACeS to sign deal with Russian firm JAKARTA (JP): PT Asia Cellular Satellite System (ACeS), a Jakarta-based satellite telecommunications provider, is to sign a contract on Sep. 24 to launch its satellite in 1998 with Russia's Krunichev Enterprise. ACeS's chief executive officer, Adi Rahman Adiwoso, told reporters here yesterday that the launch costs would be about US$70 million, far lower than the prices charged by other launch providers such as Arianespace of France.

Thailand's rating downgraded
Thailand's rating downgraded BANGKOK (Reuter): A downgrade of Thailand's short-term rating by Moody's Investors Service was negative for the country and could affect future prospects for its borrowers, financial analysts said yesterday. They were commenting on a report from London which said Moody's had downgraded Thailand's short-term sovereign ceiling ratings for bank deposits and other short-term obligations to Prime 2 from Prime 1.
