More tourists in S'pore SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore's tourist arrivals in January-June increased 5.1 percent over the same period last year to 3.55 million, the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (STPB) said yesterday. Arrivals in June alone grew 6.8 percent year-on-year to 586,973, boosted by school holidays in Malaysia and Indonesia and a series of promotional events here including an arts festival and the Great Singapore Sale in which retailers offered hefty discounts to customers.

EVA Air carries more passengers JAKARTA (JP): The number of passengers transported between Taiwan and Indonesia by EVA Air of Taiwan during the first five months of this year increased by 58.13 percent to 68,000 over the same period of 1995. EVA Air's representative in Jakarta, Peter Chen, told The Jakarta Post that during the first five months of this year, the airline carried 35,000 inbound passengers to Indonesia and 33,000 outbound passengers from Indonesia.

143 Jakartans now infected with HIV/AIDS JAKARTA (JP): The number of people infected with HIV/AIDS in Jakarta has increased from 140 people in May to 143 in June. An official of the city health agency, Rasyid Piarah, said yesterday that according to a report collected from the hospitals, laboratories and private doctors, three more people were found infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV.

Garuda delays I nearly fell out of my chair in disbelief reading that "Soepandi told reporters that Garuda had never been involved in delayed flights" (The Jakarta Post, July 19, 1996). To give just a few examples, flight 958 to Manila on Feb. 16, 1996, 436 to Yogyakarta on March 21, 980 to Denpasar on May 16, all left Jakarta around 30 minutes late. Do I assume that Soepandi regards this as on time? Presumably the flight crews did, as there was no apology or explanation for the passengers.

Murmo Samino, the Palangka Raya district manager of Merpati Nusantara airlines, confirmed the incident, saying that the aircraft changed directions at 9:05 a.m. and landed in Banjarmasin at 9:30 a.m.
