More protests over Tangerang nightspots

TANGERANG (JP): Thirty youths from the Balaraja regency in Tangerang marched to the local council yesterday, protesting that local nightspots have become sites for drug transactions and illicit prostitution.

The protest is the latest of several in the area. The main focus of their ire is the Grand Sentul Singing Hall.

They told the council's commission E for public welfare that their concerns expressed to executives have gone unheeded.

Earlier this month 1,000 community members staged a street demonstration, calling for the closure on three nightspots -- the Model Discotheque, the FM3 Transit Hotel and the Singapore Karaoke bar.

Yesterday the youths also protested at a movie theater in the Kosambi district, which they said had shown a pornographic film.

They also pointed to the numerous foodstalls which they said also functioned as prostitution sites.

Their posters at yesterday's march included one which said "Don't destroy Tangerang's young generation." (anr/18)
