East Timorese demonstrate YOGYAKARTA: About 300 East Timorese students from universities in Java and Bali demonstrated yesterday in support of Nobel peace laureate Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo. They gathered at a soccer field in northern Yogyakarta where some played soccer for a "Nobel Cup" and others staged a noisy demonstration from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Buton Island, Indonesia's bird paradise almost lost Scientists assisted by volunteers from around the world have been collecting data on birds found in Buton Island's rain forests as well as the coral reef of the nearby Wakatobi islands. Operation Wallacea, a three-year project funded by HongkongBank, was launched last year to establish wildlife reserves and to help preserve Buton's best rain forests and Wakatobi's coral reef.

Kathikeyan wins Formula Asia race JAKARTA (JP): India's Narain Kathikeyan emerged as the winner of the final round of the Formula Asia series at the Sentul circuit near Bogor. Kathikeyan won the weekend race on points after completing the 13 laps with a total score of 198 points while Piers Hunniset of England was second with 179 points. Seventeen foreign racers from eight countries took part in the two-day race on Saturday and Sunday.

Accident disrupts railway system PURWOKERTO, Central Java: A train carrying 3,220 bags of cement went off the rails near here early yesterday, throwing railway traffic into chaos for over 13 hours. Railway Officials said the accident happened at 1:05 a.m., amid heavy rain at Sumpyuh railway station when seven of the 40 train cars from Bandung heading for Yogyakarta derailed. No injuries were reported but most of the 161 tons of cement were feared spoiled because of exposure to the rain.

Philippine hopes to buy HK's boats HONG KONG (Reuter): The Philippines hopes to buy three naval patrol boats as Britain slashes its military presence and sells off Hong Kong military hardware ahead of the colony's 1997 return to China, a newspaper said yesterday. But a British defense official said that discussions were continuing, and no deal had yet been completed on the sale of the Peacock, the Plover and the Starling. A number of parties had expressed an interest, the official added.

Thai deficit to fall in 1997 BANGKOK (AFP): Thailand's current account deficit in 1997 is expected to narrow to between 6.5 and 7.0 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) from 8.0 percent this year, a finance ministry official said yesterday. The 1997 current account deficit is expected to fall by between 40 and 60 billion baht (US$1.6 and $2.4 billion) from this year, said Somchai Ruchupun, secretary general of the ministry's fiscal policies department.

Pickpocket in Kuta I was in Bali recently to attend a media presentation of a TV network here in Indonesia. I was having such a grand time exploring and appreciating the beauty of the island, when it had to be screwed up by a pickpocket. We were walking along Kuta, and stopped at a stall to buy candelabras. When the vendor did not accept the price I was offering, I decided to leave. He blocked my way and kept on insisting that his price was already low. It took a while to negotiate again.

Halla joins Aussie plant SEOUL (UPI): South Korea's Halla Group and Resource Equities Ltd. of Australia have signed a deal to build a $800-million iron plant, a Halla spokesman said yesterday. Construction is due to start by January 1998 in Perth in western Australia, due for completion by the year 2000, spokesman Kang Sang-yoon said. The plant will produce two million tons of hot briquetted iron for use in steel plates for ships and automobiles, Kang said.

Two die in flood CILACAP, Central Java: Three days of incessant rains have made the Cibereum River overflow, submerging 485 homes and 270 hectares of farmland in 50 to 125 centimeters of water. Two men were found dead after being stricken by lightning. Hundreds of residents of Rejamulya and Bangunreja villages, Kedungreja, worked together to bolster the damaged river embankment by stacking 5,000 sand and soil sacks alongside it.

Housemaid reports rape JAKARTA (JP): A 17-year-old maid told the Menteng police subprecinct yesterday that her employer had raped her. The maid, Tn, who works for Jumadi who lives on Jl. Menteng Tenggulun, Central Jakarta, said Jumadi raped her last Thursday night. Menteng Police Chief Capt. Chairul said police were waiting for the result of a medical examination. Ship captain killed JAKARTA (JP): A sailor surrendered yesterday to the Sunda Kelapa Police sub-precinct for killing his captain on a fishing boat. The Harbor Police Chief Lt. Col. Arie Sueba said the man, identified as Hs., killed Suwito, 40, on Dec. 2. when the ship was on the Java sea. "The suspect was angry because the captain often treated him improperly," Arie said. The 30-year-old sailor axed and stabbed the captain in the neck and stomach while he was asleep, he said.

Garuda Indonesia agrees to train travel agents JAKARTA (JP): National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia signed yesterday an agreement with the Association of Indonesian Travel Agencies (Asita) on improving travel agents' skills. Under the agreement, signed by Garuda chief of aviation training Daryanto and Asita chairman Sri Mulyono Herlambang, Garuda will provide training facilities for travel agents.
