Separatist rebel shot dead JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Troops in the Rajawali I and II task forces on Thursday clashed with a separatist rebel group in the Alama village on the border of Jayawijaya and Paniai regencies. Antara quoted local military spokesman Lt. Col. Maulud Hidayat as saying that one rebel had been shot dead. The troops, led by Second Sgt. Nasep, also seized a rifle and 11 bullets from the group.

Thousands need clean water SEMARANG: More than 28,000 families in 34 villages in the six districts of Cilacap, Central Java, are facing a shortage of clean water due to drought. Five vehicles were involved in a pile-up at 7 p.m. when a minivan and a Kijang minibus crashed causing two jeeps and a sedan to crash into them. One person was seriously injured and another suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Davomas reports 99% profit increase JAKARTA (JP): Cocoa butter and powder producer PT Davomas Abadi yesterday announced it had almost doubled its net profit for this year's first nine months. The company said it increased its net profit 99 percent to Rp 29.9 billion (US$12.7 million) over the same period last year. Company president Hendrawan Setiadi said the profit jump was attributable to an 88 percent increase in net sales revenue from Rp 85.2 billion to Rp 160.4 billion.

Surjadi said the revised budget, which raised the previously- approved budget by 7.63 percent, was possible because more funds were expected from city revenue, central government taxation and other sources. The governor proposed the revised budget yesterday in a plenary council session.

RI league divided into three pools JAKARTA (JP): The All-Indonesia Soccer Association decided at a meeting Thursday to split the Indonesia League into three groups -- Group West, Group Central and Group East -- with 11 teams competing in each group. Until recently, the league has been geographically split into two regional divisions, West and East. Group West includes teams from both western and eastern Indonesian provinces. Group Central is not purely regional, either.
