Ancient bones being traded SEMARANG, Central Java: Illegal trading in ancient human skeletal remains is rife in Sangiran, Sragen district, an official said yesterday. Slamet D.S., a spokesman for the provincial office of the education ministry, said the illegal trade involved both local residents and artifact traders from elsewhere. He said the authorities were finding it difficult to control the trade.

Xanana's driver's trial postponed DILI, East Timor: The district court adjourned on Thursday the trial of a man they say was the driver of imprisoned rebel leader Jose Alexandre Xanana Gusmao, citing poor health on the part of the accused and the ongoing civil unrest in the East Timorese capital. Hendrique B Da Costa is accused of assisting pro-independence rebels. The prosecution alleges that he worked as Xanana's driver prior to the rebel leader's capture by security forces.

Palm oil firm prices stable in Europe LONDON (Reuter): Palm oil prices firmed on the European vegetable oil market following the release of lower than expected Malaysian stock figures by PORLA yesterday. Malaysia's Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority (PORLA) put end-August stocks at 575,358 tons against trade expectations of 620,000 to 630,000 tons. Production was put at 702,076 tons a rise of 3.63 percent over July. But traders expressed doubts about the stock figures.

OPEC says oil prices will gradually increase JAKARTA (JP): A gradual tightening of the oil market will cause the oil price of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to increase by 3.5 percent per annum from 2001 onwards to reach US$23 a barrel in 2010, an official said. OPEC Secretary-General Rilwanu Lukman said in his written address at a luncheon meeting here yesterday OPEC's oil price will probably continue increasing to $32 a barrel by 2020.

Sumitomo, Hopewell tie up TOKYO (Reuter): Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp said it will tie up with Hong Kong's Hopewell Holdings Ltd group in a US$1.8 billion project to build an electric power plant in Indonesia. A Sumitomo spokesman said the two firms will jointly build the coal-fired plant in Tanjung Jati on Java. They plan to start generating electricity at the end of 1998, he said.
