Huge rice cone in Madura BANGKALAN, East Java: A businessman celebrated Indonesia's 50th anniversary on Aug. 17 in a unique way: he provided his whole neighborhood with a giant rice cone, with more than enough rice for all. Yohanes, the owner of a department store, used 700 kilograms of rice and 300 kilograms of fruit to make an eight-meter-tall rice cone. "The tumpeng (rice cone) was mainly for the poor," he said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Six more bodies recovered
Six more bodies recovered JAKARTA (JP): Search and rescue workers recovered six more bodies over the weekend from the wreckage of a Bouraq HS 748 plane which crashed into an Irian Jaya mountain with 10 people on board on Aug. 9. They hope the weather will be good enough this week to recover the remaining two bodies from the wreckage of the plane, which is scattered over the 2,800-meter Mount Komawa. Two bodies were brought down on Aug. 15.

He added that there was also concern about the safety of the embassy's staff.

Remember Hiroshima I read with grief the news article captioned 'Hiroshima commemorates world's first atomic bombing' on page 16 of The Jakarta Post of Aug. 7, 1995. I cannot help but feel grateful to The Jakarta Post for the concern and compassion it demonstrated by printing on the front page the picture of the famous Atom-bomb Dome of Hiroshima, in front of which a mass "die-in" was staged by hundreds of young pacifists.

The paper quoted Indonesia's ambassador to Singapore, Soedibyo Rahardjo, as saying the city-state had moved up one position from end-1994, when it was fifth with approved investments of US$8 billion. Soedibyo did not give new dollar figures for investments, the paper said.

The market was closed on Thursday, due to the Indonesian Independence Day. The overall sentiment was weak, having been deteriorated by falls in the regional bourses throughout the week.
