Problem of garbage After a very relaxing weekend in Puncak, I returned to Jakarta thankful for such simple pleasures as fresh air and exercise. However, while walking through a beautifully manicured tea plantation, I was saddened to see how much garbage was lying on the ground. There were discarded plastic bags, bottles, food wrappings and aluminum cans as far as the eye could see.

RI makes last bid for bigger haj quota JAKARTA (JP): The government has sent the secretary general of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Zarkowi Soejoti, to Riyadh on another mission seeking a higher quota for Indonesian haj pilgrims this year. Zarkowi left on Monday and will be in Riyadh until Saturday to discuss the possibility of accommodating some 36,000 additional Indonesian pilgrims.

U.S. wants RI to support KEDO JAKARTA (JP): The United States is calling for Indonesia's participation in the newly-formed Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) consortium, intended to supply North Korea with "safe" reactors. U.S. Ambassador-at-Large Robert Gallucci said yesterday that he hoped Indonesia would support KEDO, both politically and economically. "We would be very interested in an active Indonesian role, politically and substantially," Gallucci said.

Dossier of Oki to be submitted JAKARTA (JP): Head of Jakarta Prosecutor's Office, Suyoto, said on Monday that the dossiers regarding a passport forgery allegedly committed by Harnoko Dewantono, alias Oki, would be handed over to South Jakarta District Court this week. Suyoto said that 10 people would testify in the trial, including several immigration officers. Last month Suyoto appointed prosecutor Abdul Muis Gasing to handle the prosecution of Oki for passport forgery.

Soeharto ends Sarajevo trip safely ZAGREB (JP): Alhamdulillah (All praise to Allah) was the first phrase uttered by President Soeharto when his plane from Sarajevo landed in Zagreb on Monday. In fact, relief was all around as the plane carrying the President and his entourage to Zagreb touched down safely. Officials accompanying the President uttered the same phrase, while security officers and Indonesian journalists awaiting his return in Zagreb greeted him with "Welcome back Mr. President".

New network introduced JAKARTA (JP): PT Sisindosat, a subsidiary of the state-owned international telecommunications company, PT Indosat, launched here yesterday a new computer network which will lead to the technology of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Sisindosat's executive Karnajaya P. Putra told reporters that the equipment named Geo Switch is manufactured by an American company, Ungermann-Bass (UB). ATM is a connecting-oriented switching technology like a telephone network.

Portuguese ousted for sham passport JAKARTA (JP): A Portuguese TV journalist was expelled from Indonesia on Sunday after entering the country with someone else's passport, Director General of Immigration Roni Sikap Sinuraya said yesterday. "Joao Gabriel was immediately expelled after his arrival at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Sunday," Sinuraya told reporters. Singaporean arrested JAKARTA (JP): A Singaporean was arrested by an Immigration Officer in Bogor, 30 kilometers to the south of here, on Monday after he allegedly tried to gain an Indonesian passport using a fake Indonesian citizenship card. The immigration officer reportedly ascertained that the Singaporean, identified as Abd. R bin M.Y., had obtained the counterfeit citizenship card and a phony family record card from a civil servant in Sukabumi, West Java.

'TVRI' programs From Pikiran Rakyat We have every reason to be proud of private television stations for their enjoyable programs. On the other hand, the state-owned television station (TVRI) is less attractive to viewers. In my house, for example, we rarely watch TVRI simply because it's programs are not so interesting. I also notice that my neighbors prefer watching programs broadcasted by the private television stations. I therefore suggest to TVRI to improve the quality of programs.

The venture will be owned 45 percent by Katsushiro, 30 percent by Komatsu Indonesia, a local unit of the Japanese construction machinery maker, 15 percent by Nittetsu Shoji Co.

$360m to secure rice supply JAKARTA (JP): The National Logistics Agency (Bulog) will spend about Rp 800 billion (US$360 million) to secure the nation's rice supply, an agency executive says. "Bulog will spend the money to purchase rice domestically. The amount should enable the agency to purchase around 1.3 million tons of rice," Beddu Amang, Bulog's chairman, said yesterday. Beddu said that Bulog planned to build up a total stock of two million tons of rice this year.

Drug pusher arrested DENPASAR, Bali: Police have arrested a narcotic ringleader along with his accomplices and seized 700 grams of heroin and other illegal drugs. The ringleader, identified as 45-year old EK, was arrested on Saturday night in a restaurant in the Legian Kaja beach resort which he owns, Antara reported.
