Bekasi budget to be raised by 17% JAKARTA (JP): Bekasi administration has proposed an increase in its budget of Rp 61.7 billion (US$28.04 million) for the current 1994/95 fiscal year to Rp 72.6 billion. Deputy regent of Bekasi, Dede Satibi, said the proposal for the increase has been sent to the city's legislative council. Police foil timber theft SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Police rangers have seized 263 logs in Melak in the Kutai hinterland believed to have been felled illegally. The head of the Forestry Office of the Mahakam Ulu Regency Office, Rudjito, said he believed that the loggers may have felled much more than the actual amount seized. He said police intercepted the boat which was towing the logs. Several people on the vessel are now being questioned. (emb)

S'pore firm to pay for spill damage HANOI (AFP): A Singaporean shipping firm has agreed to pay US$6.75 million in compensation after one of its tankers spilled more than 1,000 tons of oil into a Vietnamese river, a report said yesterday. Neptune Orient Lines agreed last week to pay the compensation after the Municipal Court of Appeal in Ho Chi Minh City heard the case last week, the Vietnam News reported.

Six killed in boat crash MANADO, North Sulawesi: Six people were killed when two passenger boats collided in the Talise Strait. KM Salvador and KM Kalvari, both sailing from Manado to Tagulandang in the Sangihe Talaud, collided on Saturday about five miles before reaching their destination, head of the North Sulawesi Transportation Office Freddy Rorimpandey told Antara. Three passengers were killed on the spot while the other three were drowned after they fell overboard.
