Semper brawl kills one JAKARTA (JP): A mass brawl which allegedly involved Madurese and Betawi (native Jakartan) residents of Kampung Kandang, Semper subdistrict, Cilincing, has left one person dead, police said. Police subprecinct chief Renhard Hutagaol was quoted by Antara as saying on Monday that the mass brawl was sparked by the killing of a Betawi resident by a man reported to be Madurese last Saturday night. He said the brawl lasted until late on Sunday.

Over the last four years of economic turmoil in Indonesia, the postal rates have been going up and such hikes are quite understandable, but this time the new rates have crossed all limits. Recently, I went to post an ordinary letter (below 20 grams) to Singapore and was astonished when told that it would cost Rp 15,500. The postal rates must have a relationship to costs.

Suwondo sentenced to 3.5 years in jail over Bulog scandal JAKARTA (JP): The North Jakarta District Court sentenced former president Abdurrahman Wahid's former masseur Muhammad Alip Agung Suwondo on Monday to three and a half years in jail for his role in the Rp 35 billion (US$3.6 million) scandal at the State Logistics Agency (Bulog). Presiding Judge Suwardi said Suwondo was guilty of embezzling the Rp 35 billion fund from Bulog's Yanatera employee foundation.

Indofarma sees drop in profit JAKARTA (JP): The consolidated net profit of publicly listed state-owned pharmaceutical company PT Indofarma fell by 44.38 percent to Rp 41.26 billion (US$4.5 million) in the first semester of this year from Rp 74.17 billion in the same period last year. According to its unaudited financial report as per June 30, 2001, the company also booked a decrease in its operating profit from Rp 115.55 billion to Rp 70.82 billion.
