UPC to hold 'agenda of the people'

JAKARTA (JP): A non-governmental organization, the Urban Poor Consortium (UPC), plans to hold a series of activities from Aug. 8 to Aug. 16 to commemorate the 56th anniversary of Indonesia's independence, which falls on Aug. 17.

The organization said, in a media release issued here on Friday, that the activities, which it calls the agenda of the people, includes a becak (three-wheeled pedicab) show and contest on Aug. 8, street singers' gathering on Aug. 9, a public dialog and grass-puppet show on Aug. 10, and a congress of Jakarta pedicab drivers on Aug. 11.

Other items on the agenda will include a picture exhibition, titled The ruined city, which is scheduled to be held from Aug. 12 to Aug. 14.

All the activities will be held in a field opposite the Gapura Angkasa building in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, except for the people's parade, which will be in the National Monument (Monas) park on Aug. 16.
