Rice compensation proposed BANGKOK (DPA): Thailand will propose that Malaysia imports an additional 100,000 tons of rice each year to compensate for its refusal to open its domestic market to Thai-made automobiles, a news report said on Monday. KONI vows to pay training expenses for KL SEA Games JAKARTA (JP): Despite suffering financial problems, the National Sports Council (KONI) pledged on Monday to meet its obligation to finance the third phase of the Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian (SEA) Games training program next month. SEA Games deputy training director, Imron Z. Syarifuddin, said that KONI would cover the total cost of sending the 553 athletes from 29 sports organizations who qualify for the program's final phase.

Quality swimmers are getting scarce From Koran Tempo Having observed the achievements of Indonesian swimmers now, I, as a sports lover, have reason to feel deeply worried. The Southeast Asia (SEA) Games are in the offing and we have to be aware of the fact that we have not seen senior swimmers being usurped by their junior "brothers". These little brothers are expected to become swimmers of the next generation in defending Indonesia's contingent taking part in SEA Games events.

Police to summon Aceh governor over bombing JAKARTA (JP): City police detectives plan to summon Aceh governor Abdullah Puteh and former United Development Party (PPP) chairman Ismail Hasan Metareum for questioning over the recent dormitory blast in South Jakarta. Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam said on Monday that the police would write to President Abdurrahman Wahid and Minister of Home Affairs and Regional Autonomy Surjadi Sudirdja to seek their approval to question Abdullah.
