Thai chicken exports surge
BANGKOK (DPA): Thailand's chicken exports are expected to earn
the country up to US$750 million this year thanks to livestock
epidemics in Europe and Hong Kong, a senior trade official said
on Monday.
"This year is going to be a wonderful one for Thai chicken
exports," said Taweewan Boonkrue, deputy director-general of the
Thai Foreign Trade Department.
Thailand exported 240,905 tons of chicken last year, primarily
to Europe and Japan, earning the country 15.7 billion baht
($344.8 million) and expects this year's chicken exports to reach
400,000 tons, worth $758 million, said Taweewan.
Thailand's chicken exports to Europe during the first three
months of 2001, boosted by livestock disease fears in Europe,
jumped 45.7 percent to earn the country $185 million.
