Defending the rupiah
Defending the rupiah It seems that the government, notably Bank Indonesia (central bank), does not have a lot of ammunition to shore up the rate of the rupiah, which fell almost 4 percent over the last three days alone and is now hovering at a 16-month low of almost Rp 9,400 to the American dollar. The government can do little because the main reason behind the sharp depreciation is not economic, financial or external but a sovereign risk associated with political uncertainty.

Dangerous practice on toll roads
Dangerous practice on toll roads I am writing this letter because I am concerned about the dangerous practice bus operators on toll roads have recently adopted of off-loading passengers right in the middle of toll roads. The most frequent offenders are Mayasari Bakti buses. A specific example is the fork in the road leading to Bekasi/Tanjung Priok. There is a blind corner coming up from Semanggi heading toward the north part of the city.

Let there be peace in Maluku I am surprised at the way the government is handling the sectarian problem in Maluku. Every time violence breaks out, scores of people are killed and many more injured. The worst bloody incident took place on June 20, 2000, claiming about 100 lives. And what has the government done to stop the genocide there? Absolutely nothing!
