20 boxers to fight in President Cup
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina) netted 20 boxers who performed well during the 15th National Games (PON) in Surabaya last month, Pertina's deputy secretary-general, Didiet Soedijoto, said on Wednesday.
Didiet said the boxers, who will join the Indonesian team in the 19th President Cup boxing championships in Bali, from July 27 to Aug. 3, will be divided into two groups. The first group, called the Garuda team, is the first-stringer while the second stringer is grouped into the Eagle team.
Former national boxer Willem Gommies of Maluku will coach the Garuda team. He will be assisted by Jhon Amanopunyo from South Sulawesi and Wayan Sudia from North Sulawesi. Johni Asadoma has been appointed the team manager.
Didiet told Antara that 139 boxers from 20 countries had registered for the championships. "This year's championships has attracted more participants compared to past events which were attended by only 17 countries," he said. (ivy)
