RP rebels release four Malaysians and two Filipinos MANILA (AP): Moro extremists holding several dozen hostages in a remote Philippine jungle freed two Filipino teachers and four Malaysians on Friday, in their biggest releases so far. The four tired but jubilant Malaysians were flown to Manila, where they were turned over to their country's ambassador. Another earthquake shakes the capital JAKARTA (JP): An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit the capital on Friday morning. No damages or fatalities were reported. Many Jakartans were unaware of the jolt, which according to the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) lasted for about 10 seconds at 9:17 a.m. The light shock was felt mainly by those working or residing in tall buildings. Language in modern day society I am referring to Carl Chairul's story on Bahasa Indonesia in The Jakarta Post on July 16, 2000. He mentions: "America, the land of high technology, cannot claim ... ". It never ceases to amaze me the amount of comments from Indonesians in the paper, implying in some way or another, an amount of animosity toward their fellow countries. Does Carl seem to think that America has a hold over Indonesia on a number of things? I am led to believe otherwise.

Police look for burglary suspects TANGERANG (JP): A burglary took place at the residence of Sr. Supt. Iman Haryatna, a senior officer of the National Police Intelligence Directorate, in Vila Melati housing complex here on Friday morning. First Insp. Hasbullah from the local police said Tangerang detectives had found fingerprints at places inside the house.
