Street vendors rally against eviction

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Some 500 street vendors at the Terong public market staged a peaceful protest here on Friday against an impending eviction.

The protesters marched through the downtown streets and stopped in front of the office of city mayor H.B. Amiruddin.

Uji Feruji, one of the protesters, said the street vendors were going to be relocated as they were considered to be the cause of daily traffic congestion in and around the market.

The protesters failed to meet with Amiruddin on Friday but the spokesman for the mayor's office promised that he would consider the vendor's plea. (27)
