Victims' families unhappy with offer SINGAPORE (DPA): Families of victims killed in a recent air crash are unhappy with compensation offers from the Singapore airline companies involved, a news report in the island republic said yesterday. Singapore Airlines confirmed that it had offered settlements to several families of those killed when SilkAir flight MI 185 crashed into an Indonesian river Dec. 19, killing all 104 people on board. No cause for the crash has been determined.

SE Asia feed firms down SINGAPORE (Reuters): Southeast Asia's feed industry is expected to plunge by between 10 to 50 percent in 1998 from a year ago and no immediate recovery is expected, a U.S. expert said yesterday. Robert Swick, technical director at the American Soybean Association in Singapore, said total feed production is projected to plunge 50 percent in Indonesia, 20 percent in Thailand, 15 percent in the Philippines and 10 percent each in Malaysia and Vietnam from a year ago.

Java: A couple and their unborn child died Tuesday when the Argolawu express train on the Jakarta-Surakarta line hit a minibus carrying five passengers on a railway crossing here. One of the victims was a woman in the late stage of pregnancy, Antara said. Witnesses said the accident occurred at about 5 a.m. local time because the railway crossing guard had fallen asleep and failed to close the gate before the train reached the crossing.

Amexcard service I was an American Express card member until a few weeks ago. In 1977, I obtained my Amexcard in Brighton, England, when there were no Amexcard activities and operations in Indonesia. For 21 years I was a member in good standing until my withdrawal nearly three weeks ago. In January 1998 Amexcard charged an annual fee of US$175 for a gold card. At the time, this was equivalent to about Rp 1.9 million.
