Victims' families unhappy with offer
SINGAPORE (DPA): Families of victims killed in a recent air
crash are unhappy with compensation offers from the Singapore
airline companies involved, a news report in the island republic
said yesterday.
Singapore Airlines confirmed that it had offered settlements
to several families of those killed when SilkAir flight MI 185
crashed into an Indonesian river Dec. 19, killing all 104 people
on board. No cause for the crash has been determined.
SilkAir is a regional subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, the
country's flag-carrier.
The amount offered was not disclosed, but earlier reports
claimed that some families had been offered up to US$150,000.
Under the terms of the Warsaw Convention, SilkAir and Singapore
Airlines are liable for no more than $75,000, including legal
expenses, or $58,000 plus legal expenses, for a ticketed
passenger's death.
