'Argolawu' train hits car, kills 3

SURAKARTA, C. Java: A couple and their unborn child died Tuesday when the Argolawu express train on the Jakarta-Surakarta line hit a minibus carrying five passengers on a railway crossing here.

One of the victims was a woman in the late stage of pregnancy, Antara said.

Witnesses said the accident occurred at about 5 a.m. local time because the railway crossing guard had fallen asleep and failed to close the gate before the train reached the crossing.

The couple who died were Rachmat Sugianto, 33, his wife, Lusiana, 28, and their baby who could not be saved.

Two other passengers, Rachmat's mother, Eliawati, 54, and his younger brother, Budi Santoso, 33, who was driving the car, were seriously injured and had to be hospitalized.

Trianti Jayadi, one of their relatives, said the family was taking Lusiana to the Dr. Oen Solo Baru hospital to give birth.

Meanwhile, local police spokesman Lt.Col. Imam Suwangsa said the police had arrested the railroad crossing guard, Margono, 50, and questioned Sukadi, the Argolawu driver.
