Civil servants' salaries increased
Civil servants' salaries increased JAKARTA (JP): A university graduate who joins the civil service can now earn slightly more than Rp 241,800 (US$99) a month, with allowances, compared to Rp 150,200 before April. The higher pay for an entry-level university educated civil servant came into effect last month with Government Regulation No.6/1997, but is still lower than the Rp 500,000 to Rp 1,000,000 private sector starting range.

Fire razes Bank BNI building in Kota JAKARTA (JP): A fire burned out the third and fourth floors of a state-owned Bank BNI building in Kota, West Jakarta, at dawn yesterday. The fire on Jl. Lada 1 at Pinangsia subdistrict started at 4:20 a.m. on the third floor of the left wing of the building and went through the third and fourth floors of the right wing. Twenty-four fire engines arrived on the scene and managed to extinguish the fire by 7:30 a.m.

The company said it signed an acquisition deal with the bank's previous shareholders on May 17, this year. Bank Indonesia has given it the purchase the green light. But it still needs approval from the Minister of Finance.

Plywood output plan revised JAKARTA (JP): The Association of Indonesian Wood Panel Producers (Apkindo) has revised downward the country's 1997 plywood production target to about 9.6 million cubic meters from 10 million cubic meters due to a lack of log supplies. Apkindo executive chairman A. Tjipto Wignjoprajitno was quoted yesterday by Bisnis Indonesia as saying the country's plywood export target, therefore, would be lowered to 8.4 million cubic meters this year from 9.9 million cubic meters.

One of them said they were from immigration and wanted to see my passport. I asked to see their identification. One of them produced identification so we went back to my house where I showed them my passport which contained a valid visa and an entry stamp.

Bali tourists lack guides DENPASAR: Tourism dropped yesterday as tour guides and drivers flocked to polling booths. Mulyadi of the Bali Cahaya travel agency told Antara that they were not providing as many tourism packages. "We have difficulty finding drivers and tour guides," he said. Another agency reported a similar situation. A group of Taiwanese tourists had to delay their visit to several sites, Mulyadi added. Drivers and tour guides were available later in the day.

(MAS) said yesterday the group pre-tax profit rose 39.1 percent year-on-year to a record 349. 4 million ringgit (US$139.76 millions) in the year to March. USDA raises exports credits WASHINGTON (Reuter): The U.S. Agriculture Department on Wednesday said it increased by US$100 million the amount of credit guarantees available to U.S. exporters for sales of U.S. farm goods to Indonesia under the GSM-102 program. The action raises the fiscal year 1997 allocation to Indonesia to $260 million from $160 million, USDA said.

The chairperson of the foundation, Tini Hadad, said on Wednesday the municipality should be praised for listening to people's complaints. "We knew the sticker sales would generate complaints," she said. Tini said the policy regulating the collection of donations lacked transparency and consumers were annoyed by the collection method.
