Rumor pushes Bre-X, Barrick TORONTO (Reuter): The rumor mill surrounding Bre-X Minerals Ltd shifted into high gear again on Wednesday as investors speculated about the outcome of Bre-X's negotiations with its Indonesian partners and Barrick Gold Corp, analysts said. Bre-X stock was up 0.40 to 22.65 on more than 820,000 shares in early trading in Toronto on Wednesday. The stock rose 1.05 on Tuesday to 22.25. Barrick was also active yesterday, rising 0.20 to 35.40 on 714,000 shares in Toronto.

Siregar, said yesterday the ministry had planned to resettle 2,962 families in Merauke during the 1996/1997 fiscal year, but up to February this year had only resettled 2,000. The remaining 962 families are to be resettled next month.

Pulp mill takes downtime NEW YORK (Reuter): Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings Ltd said on Wednesday its PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper Mill in Indonesia took 27 days of downtime in the fourth quarter of 1996, but is now operating again. The company's PT Inti Indorayon Utama mill, also in Indonesia, took eight days of downtime. For the two mills combined, the downtime equaled 55,000 tons of production volume. The company has not changed its 1997 production forecast of 650,000 tons.

Milk imports reduced JAKARTA (JP): The volume of milk that processing companies can import has been reduced under a new quota set for the first half of this year, an official said yesterday. Director General of Animal Husbandry Erwin Soetirto said the government set the quota at the equivalent of 1.7 liters of fresh milk for each liter of milk from local farmers. The old quota was one liter of imported milk for every two liters of local milk.

An expansion of oil palm plantations caused the shortage, he said.

In 1996, 7.4 million PCs were sold in 10 major Asia-Pacific markets -- Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand -- and 1.7 million were sold in small emerging markets in the region.
