2,000 families resettled

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The Ministry of Transmigration resettled 2,000 families in the Merauke district, Irian Jaya, in 1996, Antara reported yesterday.

The head of the Irian Jaya provincial transmigration office, Agus Q. Siregar, said yesterday the ministry had planned to resettle 2,962 families in Merauke during the 1996/1997 fiscal year, but up to February this year had only resettled 2,000.

The remaining 962 families are to be resettled next month.

The transmigrants live in the Jagebob, Bupul and Muting resettlement sites along the trans-Irian highway in areas bordering Papua New Guinea.
