Tourists' remains sent home DENPASAR, Bali: The body of a Dutch tourist who drowned Sunday at Kuta Beach was flown home on Monday, Antara reported yesterday. The agency quoted a spokesman of the local administration, Gus Susmatra, as saying that 43-year-old V.I. Jagbandham was sent in a Singapore Airlines' plane to Amsterdam. Meanwhile, the body of a 54-year-old German tourist identified as Balzer, who also drowned at the same beach on Saturday, will be flown home today.

Talks on E. Timor resume UNITED NATIONS (AFP): A new round of closed-door talks between Indonesia and Portugal focusing on a political solution for East Timor opens here today. The UN-sponsored talks, involving senior officials from Indonesian and Portuguese foreign ministries, are scheduled to end Friday. They are the third round to be convened by UN chief Kofi Annan who took office in January. A Portuguese diplomat said "the main thing is that both sides are talking".

Forestry licenses revoked JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Forestry Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo said yesterday that he has instructed the provincial forestry office to temporarily revoke permits of 176 timber and plantation companies today if they could not prove they did not start the fires. "If the companies can not present their dossiers tomorrow (Wednesday), their wood use permits will be revoked automatically," he said in a news conference yesterday.

In reference to Education and Culture Minister Wardiman Djojonegoro's statement on academic unemployment (Sept. 27), it is high time that The Jakarta Post published an article or a series of articles that deal with our major problems and go to the core of each issue. Unemployed graduates from 1995 number about 400,000 -- 13.5 percent of the 3.23 million alumni in that year. Add to that total those former students without jobs since 1970 and you have about 10 million.

The problem lies in its inconsistent enforcement because certain members of the City Land Transportation Agency and traffic violators have sealed their business in briberies. Even when a traffic violation case is brought to court, middlemen at the court offer their mediatory services. So, drivers tend to ignore traffic violations.

Jeep crushes female street sweeper to death JAKARTA (JP): A female public cleaner was crushed to death by a speeding jeep while sweeping Jl. Pluit Utara Raya in North Jakarta yesterday morning. The driver of the Taft jeep, apparently a local high school student, was held by the worker's colleagues, who stopped the vehicle a few meters from the scene. The victim was identified as Raha, 30, of Jl. Muara Baru Ujung. Raha died on the spot after her head was crushed under the vehicle's wheels.
