Ramos denies role in gold case
MANILA (DPA): President Fidel Ramos denounced as "a conspiracy" yesterday allegations that he holds an account in a Swiss bank containing money from the sale of gold owned by the late Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Accusations that Ramos maintains an account in the Geneva- based Bank Julius Baer and Company fueled suspicion the government has signed a compromise deal with the Marcos family to share recovered ill-gotten wealth of the deposed strongman.
"This must be part of a conspiracy that some irresponsible, spurious and maybe criminally-inclined people are trying to bring upon the Filipino audience," Ramos said in reaction to the disclosure by Robert Swift, an American lawyer campaigning for compensation for 10,000 victims of Marcos' 20-year reign.
