Student sold to pimp MEDAN, North Sumatra: Two girls, aged 21 and 16, will soon stand trial on charges of selling a 16-year-old junior high school student last year to a man in Belawan, 30 kilometers from here. Prosecutor Dahlia Mahmud said the defendants had fooled the victim by promising her a job in a plush restaurant where she would earn Rp 20,000 (US$8.50) a day.

Flooding hits Brebes BREBES, Central Java: Major floods hit the regency yesterday, inundating six villages and 40 hectares of onion fields. The flooding spread after fast currents of water destroyed a seven-meter long flood dike on the Babakan river following heavy rains from Wednesday and Thursday. Brebes farmers has already supplied 75 tons of onions to Indofood, one of Indonesia's largest instant noodle producers.

Competitive business I am an Australian Moslem working in a private sector enterprise in Indonesia. I subscribe to The Jakarta Post and try to keep myself informed of current events in the business sector. There are many articles quoting the government stressing the need to increase exports. I was amused to read recently that high wages were making us uncompetitive on the open market, and countries such as Vietnam are supplying products to Australia because of this factor.
