Ex-communists cannot vote

SEMARANG, Central Java: A total of 3,202 former political convicts here may not vote in the 1997 general election, Antara quoted an official as saying yesterday.

Head of the Social-Political Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Col. Misnadi, said that out of the province's 269,537 former political prisoners, 266,355 of them will be able to vote next year.

"The number of people who presently may not vote is much smaller than in 1992, when 9,000 people could not vote," Misnadi said. "Many of them have improved themselves." (swe)
