India's Tilak upsets Indonesia's GM Utut

JAKARTA (JP): Utut Adianto blinked and had his all-conquering run checked by Indian international master Sharad Tilak in the Cakti Chess Invitational tournament in Madras, India, on Friday.

The Indonesian number one grandmaster had the advantage of playing white. But he blundered midway through the King Indian game and Tilak immediately capitalized to force an unexpected draw.

"It was a mistake ... a small mistake but alas ... I should have not taken the step," said a dejected Utut who accepted Tilak's offer of a draw in the 43th move.

Despite the draw, Utut remained unshakable at the top of the standings. He shares the lead with his toughest rival, British grandmaster Anthony Miles, the top seed here with the best elo rating of 2,635. Miles scored a fifth-round win on the same night over another Indian, Praveen Thipsay.

In the sixth round, Utut will play black against another Indian international master Varugeesa Koshy. (arf)
