Infant death rate remains high PADANG, West Sumatra: The provincial government hopes that midwives can help reduce the infant mortality rate from the current 57 to 50 per 1,000 live births over the next four years. To achieve the target, the government has recruited 400 new midwives how will work in villages throughout the province for three years. According to the official 1994 statistics, the national mortality rate stood at 54 per 1,000 live births.

Pepper exports fall JAKARTA (JP): Lampung's black pepper exports fell 22 percent to 13,320 tons for the first nine months of this year from 16,910 tons for the corresponding period of 1995. Deddy Gurnadi of the provincial Ministry of Industry and Trade said yesterday the value of pepper exports dropped around 30 percent to US$27.6 million for the January-September period from $40.3 million for the same period last year. He attributed the drop to the province's loss of pepper plantations.

Petronas seals gas deal KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia LNG Tiga Sdn Bhd, a unit of national oil company Petronas, said Tuesday it had sealed a 20- year pact to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. Ltd. (JAPEX). The contract was for the supply of up to 1.5 million tons of LNG a year starting in 2001, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) said in a statement. Bank Bira's profit rises 100 percent JAKARTA (JP): Bank Bira announced yesterday its net profit increased 100 percent in the first nine months of this year to Rp 43.99 billion (US$18.6 million) from Rp 21.97 (US$9.3 million) billion for the same period last year. The publicly listed bank said the increase in its net profit in the January to September period was 9 percent higher than its earlier projected profit of Rp 40.36 billion ($17.06 million).

Information Minister Harmoko and Home Affairs Minister Yogie S.M. advised yesterday Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo to sue Der Spiegel to prove he didn't lie when accusing the magazine of twisting his comments.
