Situbondo coral reef under threat

SURABAYA: The famed coral reefs in Situbondo have come under serious threat over the past several months due to widespread coral theft, a press report said yesterday.

Together with white sand beaches, coral reefs are Situbondo's main tourist attraction.

A navy diver, Maj. Djayeng Tirto, told Antara that the destruction of marine resources continues so fast the reefs may be destroyed in the near future.

"Several months ago, Situbondo's beautiful coral reefs were still abundant but now they are in a deplorable condition," said Djayeng.
