Communist symbol sparks panic BREBES, Central Java (JP): The solemnity of Pancasila Sanctity Day on Oct. 1 in the regent's office here was tarnished by the mysterious appearance of the communist logo on bureaucrats' computer screens. Some of the regent's aides could not believe their eyes when a hammer-and-sickle logo, the symbol of the outlawed and hated Indonesian Communist Party, appeared. The despised emblem first appeared on the screens of employees in the legal affairs section.

University students from pro-democracy party UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi (JP): A group of Hasanuddin University students announced yesterday the establishment of Pro- Democracy Students Party, saying they refused to be cowed by the recent political tension in the country. They also denied any ties with the condemned Democratic People's Party (PRD), which stands accused of conducting communist activities and of masterminding the violent rioting in Jakarta on July 27.

Sinar Mas helps Amcol SINGAPORE (Reuter): Indonesian conglomerate Sinar Mas will inject some of its palm oil estates in Indonesia and a noodle factory in China into troubled Amcol Holdings, the Business Times said yesterday. The newspaper said the assets to be injected were worth more than Singapore $2.0 billion. It also said Amcol was to be renamed Golden Amcol. In August, Sinar Mas was named the rescuer of trading and property group Amcol by its judicial managers from Price Waterhouse.

RI for renomination of Boutros-Ghali JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will fight for the renomination of Boutros Boutros-Ghali as the United Nations secretary-general when it chairs the Security Council next month, Antara said yesterday. But Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas told reporters at the United Nations in New York on Wednesday that other council members should prepare for the possibility that Boutros-Ghali's renomination for a second term would be vetoed by the United States.
