Asian stock markets close weaker HONG KONG (Reuter): Most Asian stock markets weakened yesterday although Tokyo shares closed marginally stronger on the back of the dollar breaking through the 98-yen barrier, brokers said. Traffic police overwhelmed JAKARTA (JP): Traffic in the city is so bad that the police have conceded "defeat" in their struggle to ease congestion in many areas. "We will raise our hands (in a gesture of powerlessness) whenever the people raise the demand that we make traffic flow freely everywhere," Chief of the City Police traffic section Col. Soeroso said on Monday. The best the police can do, Soeroso said, is to remind road users to abide by traffic rules and to be patient.

Protests rock two cities DILI, East Timor: The cities of Liquisa and Maliana were rocked by protests on Monday after the results of a recruitment drive at the respective regency offices was announced. In Liquisa, hundreds of youths attacked the regency office after not finding their names on a list of 2,000 people recruited to work as regency employees. Four people were injured and about 10 people were detained by the authorities following the fracas.

"Four of the 13 gang members are still at large, but have been identified," city police spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang Permantoro told reporters yesterday. Of the nine arrested, Sur, 29, suspected of being the ring leader, was shot dead while trying escape police custody, Bambang said.
