Truck drivers most reckless toll users JAKARTA (JP): The National Police have singled out truck drivers as the most reckless toll road users in Indonesia. Police spokesman Brig. Gen. I Ketut Ratta said yesterday that the numerous traffic violations on toll roads showed that the discipline of Indonesian drivers is yet to be improved. "The lack of discipline causes four to five accidents to happen on toll roads every day," Ratta told reporters.

Use of stickers On April 19, 1995, The Jakarta Post reported an interview given by the city council's Chairman of Commission C, H Helmy AR Syihap, that the three-in-one regulation should be replaced by the use of stickers. At last someone high up shares my views, contained in my article published in Kompas some time ago. I made the same proposal for the same reasons. The only difference was that I mentioned Singapore as an example, where this sticker system has been in operation for a long time.

Happy holidays
Happy holidays I and a group of colleagues decided to escape Jakarta and spend the Easter weekend at Pondok Dewata Seaside Cottage (PDSC) in Pelabuhan Ratu, where I had stayed on numerous occasions and had an enjoyable time. Several telephone calls and faxes later I had managed to secure five bungalows, three of which requiring an extra bed, with a special weekend rate and a 10 percent discount, bearing in mind I was a regular and reliable customer.

Ban on farming in Bekasi queried JAKARTA (JP): Dozens of farmers in Tarumajaya village in Bekasi have questioned PT Putra Duta Mahkota's decision to ban them from working on their rice fields. The farmers, who started cultivating the 8.1-hectare field in 1984, have not been allowed to work in the field by the company since February. One of the farmers complained that the company does not even have the proper permits from the Bekasi regency to control the land.

Metromini driver gets 15 years JAKARTA (JP): A bus driver whose reckless driving last year caused the deaths of 33 passengers in North Jakarta was convicted of murder yesterday and sentenced to 15 years in jail. The North Jakarta District Court found Ramses Silitonga, alias Honas, guilty of the murder of the 33 people and for causing bodily harm to 13 other passengers when he drove a Metromini bus which plunged into Sunter River on March 6, 1994, Antara said.

East Timorese jailed for demonstration DILI, East Timor (JP): The Dili district court has sentenced two men to a total of 41 months in jail for staging an anti- government demonstration at the East Timor University in January. The court sentenced Lemos Bareto to 21 months and Inasio de Jesus dos Santos to 20 months in jail. Both offenders, who were tried separately, accepted the verdict. They are part of 13 demonstrators at the university, who have been brought to trial.
