Truck drivers most reckless toll users

JAKARTA (JP): The National Police have singled out truck
drivers as the most reckless toll road users in Indonesia.

Police spokesman Brig. Gen. I Ketut Ratta said yesterday that
the numerous traffic violations on toll roads showed that the
discipline of Indonesian drivers is yet to be improved.

"The lack of discipline causes four to five accidents to
happen on toll roads every day," Ratta told reporters.

He said that of the total cases of toll road traffic
violations the police recorded last month, 653 were committed by
truck drivers.

The second worst violators were drivers of pick-ups (280),
followed by those of sedans (268), minibuses (146), buses (120)
and jeeps (45).

The most common violations were to drive slower than the
minimum speed limit, driving in the lanes reserved for emergency
purposes and zigzagging in the lanes.

Last month's violations resulted in 135 accidents, which
caused more than a dozen deaths, scores of injuries and
substantial material losses, Ratta said.

Ratta called on motorists to better abide by the road rules so
that the number of accidents on toll roads can be minimized.

"Theoretically, accidents should be rare on toll roads, which
are spacious and smooth," he said.

Ratta also announced that the police listed 2,086 criminal
cases, including 42 murders and 1,770 thefts, across Indonesia
last month. (29)
