'Turning copper into gold' Todd Callahan, Senior Technical Advisor, PT Jasa Cita, Jakarta India's Privatization Ministry, since its establishment in December 1999, has made remarkable progress, completing over 30 divestments in an environment that has not always been friendly to privatization. Singapore exports rise 18.40% SINGAPORE : Singapore's key non-oil domestic exports rose a better-than-expected 18.40 percent in January compared to the first month of 2002, boosted by gains in pharmaceutical and semiconductor exports, the government said Monday. The January performance was significantly better than the range of forecasts from analysts polled by financial news service AFX-Asia. The forecast ranged from a contraction of 1.2 percent to a growth of 5.0 percent.

On borrowing I am a daily reader of The Jakarta Post and I particularly liked the "By The Way..." column in your Feb. 9 Sunday edition. The piece was titled "Blessed absentmindedness, misplaced advice", by Chandrika Radhakrishnan. Upon returning to Indonesia after living abroad for almost 40 years, I experienced what the writer described in the article. I "lost" millions of rupiah, not just a few cents.
