Fire razes furniture workshop JAKARTA (JP): Fire burned down yesterday a furniture workshop on Jl. Raya Cipondoh 89, Tangerang. No casualties were reported. Seven fire engines were deployed to fight the blaze which started around 4:30 a.m. and was put out by 1 p.m. Yusef, a member of the Tangerang Fire Department, said it took a long time to completely extinguish the flames because of the large amount of wood stacked at the 3,000-square-meter workshop.

Petronas to buy tankers KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): Malaysia's national petroleum company, Petronas, wants to buy up to six liquefied natural gas tankers to meet the industry's increasing transportation needs, company vice-president Hamzah Bakar said yesterday. Petronas has received tenders from several shipyards in countries like France and Japan, Hamzah told reporters taking delivery of the company's fifth liquefied natural gas tanker. Details would be finalized early next year.

Sumalindo's profit drops JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed PT Sumalindo Lestari Jaya's net profit declined by 122 percent to Rp 5.3 billion (US$2.17 million) in 1996 from Rp 11.8 billion in 1995 due to the increase in interest cost and exchange rate cost. "The interest cost rose from Rp 5.8 billion to Rp 9.9 billion and exchange rate cost rose from Rp 3.1 billion to Rp 5 billion," the company said in a statement.

Petroz finds 85m Timor Sea gas column SYDNEY (Reuter): Oil and gas explorer Petroz NL said yesterday drilling encountered a gross gas column of about 85 meters in the Hingkip-1 well in the Timor Sea Zone of Cooperation (ZOCA). The well is located in ZOCA block 91-12 on a prominent structural trend 6.6 km north of the Undan-1 well and 9.9 km north west of the Bayu-4 well. "Preliminary analysis suggest a higher liquid content in the gas at Hingkip compared to the Bayu-Undan Field," Petroz said.

Dividends reflect rises in profits of Texmaco units JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed PT Texmaco Perkasa Engineering, PT Polysindo Eka Perkasa and PT Texmaco Jaya, -- all under the Texmaco group -- will pay cash dividends of Rp 90 (4 U.S. cents), Rp 60 and Rp 30 per share respectively, the companies said yesterday. The cash dividend payouts represent respectively 33 percent, 39 percent and 43 percent of their respective total net profits last year.

Is our society orderly or disorderly? By Mochtar Buchori JAKARTA (JP): Prof. Hans Christian von Baeyer's article on "Disorderly Conduct" in the May/June edition of Sciences has changed my old notions on order and disorder. I am no longer sure how to interpret the political realities in countries such as Myanmar and Turkey: order, disorder, featureless order, orderly disorder, or order under apparent disorder. Or is it disorder under apparent order?
