JAS Asian flights

TOKYO (AFP): Japan Air System (JAS) Co. Ltd. plans to expand flights to China and other Asian destinations while streamlining loss-making services in the domestic market, a spokesman said yesterday.

"We are hoping to expand our international services, focusing on East and Southeast Asian countries," the JAS spokesman said, adding that Beijing and Shanghai were among new destinations under consideration.

The nation's third-largest carrier, based in Tokyo, operates three international services, all in Asia.

They comprise seven Tokyo-Seoul flights a week, in operation since 1988, three flights a week between Osaka and Guangzhou, China, launched in 1995, and four Osaka-Hong Kong flights a week, which began on June 2.

The spokesman said JAS wanted to reopen its Tokyo-Singapore service, which was suspended in 1995, if "conditions for the move can be met."
