S'pore fixes license fees SINGAPORE (DPA): Singapore's government has announced it will fix license fees, rather than use bids, for firms hoping to enter the country's lucrative telecommunications market, reports said Saturday. Local giant Singapore Telecom's long-time monopoly on the country's basic telecommunications will end on March 31, 2000.

Two missing as major floods hit Cenral Java SEMARANG (JP): Two people went missing and thousands fled their homes as major floods hit Central Java's northern coastal towns on Saturday, officials said yesterday. The floods triggered by incessant downpours inundated more than 10,000 houses in Semarang, Demak, Pati and Jepara. A 50-year-old widow, whose house was washed away, in Semarang and a 60-year-old woman in Pati have been declared missing. They are feared dead.

Expired foods flood market DENPASAR, Bali: Processed and canned goods passed their expiry dates have been found flooding a number of supermarkets across the country, a researcher at the Information and Environment Management Center said Friday. Ilhamy Elias said such foodstuffs were apparently imported close to their expiry dates, so that by the time they reached supermarket shelves, the expiry date had passed. He did not reveal the amount of expired food found on the domestic market.

Suratno Hadisuwito, a director of Bumiputera Insurance, said that Mangaraja R. Tobing, the driver of a city bus on the Kampung Rambutan-Kota route, had stopped 72 students from the Cawang technical high school hijacking the bus early this month after they were involved in a brawl.
