Five C. Jakarta students arrested for killing

JAKARTA (JP): Central Jakarta Police have arrested five of six
senior high school students wanted for killing a student of a
technical high school in a brawl in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta
on Dec. 26.

Chief Lt. Col. M. Ibrahim said Saturday that the five were
arrested in separate places in the capital. "The fifth suspect,
identified as Abdul, was arrest Friday," Ibrahim said.

Abdul, 17, was caught by police while he was on his way home
on Jl. Jati Bunder.

According to Ibrahim, Abdul, along with four other friends --
Donny, 18, Effendi, 17, Zulachar, 17 and Chandra, 16, all
students of the state-run senior high school SMU 7 -- beat and
stabbed to death Anan Fauzi, a technical high school student,
during the fierce brawl.

"There is only one suspect left. We hope we can catch him
soon," Ibrahim said.

Ibrahim said Dony, Effendi, Zulachar and Chandra were arrested
Tuesday night.

Dony was arrested in his house on Jl. Petojo Selatan in
Central Jakarta, he said.

Police picked up Effendi, Zulachar and Chandra in their homes
also Tuesday, thanks to information from Dony.

Tanah Abang Police Chief Maj. Zulkarnain said the brawl
started when the suspects and dozens of their friends stopped a
Metromini bus which was crowded with students from a technical
senior high school, among them Anan.

Anan and many of his friends got out of the bus and escaped
upon seeing that they were outnumbered by the suspects' group,
Zulkarnain said.

"Anan was separated from his friends. He ran to a housing
complex. The suspects chased him and beat him and stabbed him in
the stomach and chest," he said.

According to Zulkarnain, a resident of the housing complex who
tried to break up the fight was also stabbed in the hand. "Police
seized the box cutter from one of the suspects. The box cutter
was allegedly used to finish the victim."

Effendi told the police that he and his friends planned to
turn themselves in to the police. "But we were caught before we
surrendered."

"The technical high school students have been our enemies for
years," the second grade student said.

At least 15 students have been killed in separate brawls in
the city last year. (jun)
