Limit car ownership!
Limit car ownership! In order to solve the chronic problem of traffic jams in Jakarta, more than a progressive car tax is required. Limitation of private car ownership should be enforced, bearing in mind that the number of private cars has reached 1,800,000. Apart from that, the government should enhance and increase the volume of infrastructure. This would call for a financial commitment, of course. How are the funds going to be obtained?

New heights in Ecstasy The Ecstasy menace in Indonesia is escalating to new heights. Just in the past week, immigration authorities foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 70,000 pills by two Singaporeans through Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Customs officials discovered a package containing tens of thousands of the pills at a post office in Jakarta. In Surabaya, police raided a house where a family allegedly ran an operation producing and distributing Ecstasy pills.

Four Chinese to coach Indonesian wushu squad JAKARTA (JP): Four Chinese coaches will train local wushu athletes preparing for the 19th SEA Games here next October, an official said. Antonius Haliman, head of the Indonesian Wushu Association said Wednesday that the four Chinese coaches are Chang Ong-Jun, Kao Fan Poh, Pang Ling Tai and Lio Cen Li. At first the National Sports Council (KONI) only allowed one coach to train the 26 wushu athletes.

Killer couple sentenced BANDA ACEH, Aceh: A man and his wife were sentenced yesterday for the murder of another couple. Judges in the Meulaboh District Court sentenced Amir Hamzah bin Cut Ahmad to 20 years for the murder of Sabirin and his wife Nurhanisah almost eight months ago. Amir's wife, Agustina binti M. Yahya, got 15 years for helping Amir commit the murder. The punishment imposed on Amir was five years longer than the penalty sought by prosecutor M. Syahbuddin.

Sloppy censorship From Bisnis Indonesia It was inevitable that the film Striptease, starring Demi Moore and currently showing in movie houses, would be heavily cut by the censorship board. It is deplorable that the board has done some sloppy work, leaving much too obvious breaks in the film's sequence. Apart from smoother transitions to cover up the mutilated parts of films, I expect the censorship board to be more flexible in their criteria.

Toll road crash claims four lives CIKAMPEK, West Java: Four people were killed and six were seriously injured in a midnight crash on the Cikampek toll road near Karawang yesterday. The accident, believed to be the worst in the past month, happened when a truck slammed into a bus parked in the emergency lane with a flat tire. Toll road authorities said all the victims were bus passengers.

Sahid builds new hall JAKARTA (JP): Hotel Sahid Jaya, a five-star hotel on Jl. Sudirman, Central Jakarta, is building a new convention and conference center, costing about US$ 8 million. Hotel general manager Guido J.A. Gyde said yesterday the new convention center, called Puri Ratna, would be linked to the existing Puri Agung Convention Hall. The hall and the center are expected to hold up to 4,500 guests for a cocktail party or 2,000 for an elegant sit-down dinner.

Wendy's to open 60 outlets JAKARTA (JP): Fast-food franchisee PT Wendy Citarasa plans to open 60 outlets in eight cities next year, its general manager said yesterday. Jonathan Goenawan said the planned outlets were expected to increase the company's annual sales to around US$38.3 million. He said the outlets, with expected monthly sales of $60,000 each on average, would be opened in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Malang, Denpasar, Cirebon and Medan.
