Kupang boosts cement output JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Semen Kupang will build a second plant in Kupang early next year with a production capacity of 400,000 tons of cement per year. "Total investment for the expansion will be Rp 110 billion (US$47.4 million)," PT Semen Kupang's president Satar Taba said as reported by Antara from Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, over the weekend. He said the Rp 110 billion would be derived from the firm's retained profit.

Man jailed for heroin possession TANGERANG, West Java (JP): A 25-year-old man got four years jail on Friday for possessing 65 grams of heroin. The Tangerang District Court found Bali tour guide Herry Agung Sugiono had violated Law No. 9/1976 on narcotics. He was also fined Rp 10 million. The sentence was a year less than the prosecutor's demand. "The defendant was cooperative during the trial," presiding judge Marni Emmy said.

Govt sets up ambitious plan to boost cotton production JAKARTA (JP): The government is embarking on an ambitious plan to boost the country's cotton fiber production to around 380,000 tons per year in the next five years from 2,500 tons at present. Spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture Bambang Subiantoro recently said the directorate general for plantations had laid out a plan to extend cotton plantations to an area of 190,000 hectares by 2000/2001.

Ramp breaks, damages cars BANTEN, West Java: Huge waves and strong winds in the Sunda Strait Saturday broke open the vehicle ramp of the Kotabumi ferry. Twenty cars on board were overturned and seriously damaged as the ramp sank, but no casualties were reported. Antara reported the ferry had been idle in the waters off the Merak coast for two hours awaiting its turn to approach the quay.
