Holy Communion
Holy Communion By Sitor Situmorang It was three o' Clock in the morning. Our Land Rover crawled in the dimness of the dying moon over the steep and winding road towards Prapat. The huge island in the middle of the lake looked like a reclining giant. Prapat sits on a promontory, her electric lights blending with the moonlight flickering off the restless waters -- an ocean liner at anchor. Emotion welled up within me -- home! -- but there was no joy or happiness.

Guess What?
Guess What? To laymen, the famous expressionist paintings of Affandi may look "scrawly", done carelessly. The question is: Why did Affandi scrawl on his canvases, instead of making "good" works like Basuki Abdullah's? The late Affandi and Basuki were both Indonesia's leading painters of different styles -- Affandi an expressionist, Basuki a naturalist. Such a question did not come from an art critic -- but from Brig. Gen.

Amusing piece in 'By the Way'
Amusing piece in 'By the Way' Thank you, Jak Jaunt, for your highly amusing piece Making The Man Mightier Than The Word in your By The Way column in The Jakarta Post, Sunday, August 6, 1995. I have clipped out the article and it will probably be found among my possessions when I depart this world. Mr. Aloysius Haryono and I "reacted to the other's writing" about a year and a half ago (I believe Indonesians are smiling less nowadays, Mr. Haryono rejected that view).

Scars of war: Missing toenails
Scars of war: Missing toenails By Carole Biniasch JAKARTA (JP): When we were growing up, one thing about our father puzzled us greatly... his toes simply looked different. Like most Chinese fathers, ours was a man of few words, and one would not broach a subject as delicate as ten toes that looked rather odd. Curiosity did get the better of my reserve, however, and one day I asked him. That was over thirty years ago, but his image and his words are still etched indelibly into my memory.

Professionalism of radio announcer
Professionalism of radio announcer I venture to question the professionalism displayed by one of the local radio stations, 107.85 FM, otherwise commonly known as radio DMC. Last Saturday night I happened to tune my radio to DMC, listening to what was, apparently, a combination of rap and soul music. What greatly surprised and amused me was the manner of the disc jockey that was hosting the show.

Credit cards, a boon or a bane?
Credit cards, a boon or a bane? JAKARTA (JP): One reason I avoid people is that most of them are unbearably loquacious. Recently, I had an occasion where I had to put up with a lot of yap on credit cards. The whole thing started when someone in the group proclaimed that credit cards were pernicious: "Weakens the strong and destroys the weak." Only Ahmed reacted, but to the contrary, and rather exuberantly. "Well, what's wrong with you? Credit cards are a boon, a simplifier.

Personal attack
Personal attack What Mr. Abdul Rachman wrote in his letter (Ill-advised presumptions, Aug. 13, 1995) seems to have been a personal attack on Ratih, Teguh and myself. However, since the letter was made public through the Post, I feel that I should respond as such. First of all, it appears that Mr. Abdul Rachman may have been misled by the title of the article I wrote on Teguh's exhibition, supplied by the editors of The Jakarta Post. The original title was Dans ou Sans Paris.
