Regional trade the challenger for ASEAN's future By Vitit Muntarbhorn BANGKOK: The macro-economic growth rate of ASEAN countries has been very impressive this decade with some countries enjoying a Gross Domestic Product growth of nearly 10 percent per annum. This is greatly due to increasing industrialization for export orientation and the success in exporting their goods. Yet, intra- ASEAN trade has for a long time lagged behind trade with those outside the region.

Circus declines mayor's help offer MANILA (AFP): A Russian circus troupe stranded in a southern Philippine city has declined an offer by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim to house its starving animals at the zoo in the Philippine capital, the official Philippine News Agency (PNA) said yesterday. Boris Fedotov, head of the Russian All-Star Circus, said the animals -- two elephants, seven bears, three camels, four llamas and a puma -- were trained for the circus and not meant for the zoo.

Affair ends in tragedy JAKARTA (JP): A man was killed by a jealous husband in Tambun, Bekasi, yesterday, police reported. The Tambun police precinct reported that Yasri, 28, was stabbed in the head and neck by Samaun, who suspected him of having an affair with his wife. One of Yasri's relatives said that Yasri, who worked for Samaun, had been having an affair with his boss' wife, Zaenab, 30, for years. After getting wind of the affair, Samaun warned Yasri and then fired him.

At least 507 students from 27 provinces took part in the competition compared to 314 last year. John Pasaribu, LIPI's head of Popularization and Dissemination of Science and Technology, said that 31 of the participants had been chosen as finalists.

The August volume is about 200,000 to 300,000 barrels more than July levels. Traders said the increase resulted from Indonesia's move to delay the turnaround at a 200,000 barrel-per- day Balikpapan refinery beyond September.
