Australian envoy visits Irian
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Australian ambassador Allan Taylor has discussed with governor Jacob Pattipi the fate of Irian Jaya residents who have crossed back from Papua New Guinea.
Taylor said Monday he inquired about the border crossers because Australia is a regular donor to the UN High Commissioner on Refugees that helps handle the problem.
Pattipi said that the residents' living condition has been improving since the local government helped them rebuild their homes destroyed by (Free Papua Movement) rebels.
Officials say that Irian Jayan villagers crossed the border to Papua New Guinea because they were terrorized by rebels, who often rob them.
Pattipi told his guest that the government also relocated former refugees in resettlement sites, including one in the Merauke regency. He said the villagers were "happy" because they are learning new skills from resettlers from other provinces.
Taylor also paid a courtesy call on chief of the Trikora military command headquarters, Antara reported. (pan)
