'Piracy surges in Indonesia' KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): Indonesia is witnessing a surge in piracy, with nearly a third of the world's sea robberies taking place in its water during the first five months of this year, an official report said yesterday. The Regional Piracy Center of the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said 17 pirate attacks were reported in Indonesian waters between January and May, compared to seven in the Hong Kong-Luzon-Hainan zone and nine off Somalia.

Manado airport to be expanded MANADO, North Sulawesi: The runway at the Sam Ratulangi airport will be extended later this year from 2,500 to 3,000 meters in anticipation of increased traffic by business executives between Manado and cities in the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. The head of the North Sulawesi Transportation Office, Freddy Rorimpandey, said Sam Ratulangi airport should be able to accommodate wide-bodied jets such as Boeing 747s, DC-10s and MD- 11s by next year.

Date set for Mantra's cremation DENPASAR, Bali: The family of Ida Bagus Mantra, the former Bali governor who died last Friday, has set July 22 as the date for his cremation ceremony, popularly known as Ngaben. The various Bali Hindu rituals leading to the climax of the ceremony will begin on July 12, Antara reported. Mantra, who also served as Indonesia's ambassador to India and was a member of the Supreme Advisory Council, died at a local hospital after suffering from chronic kidney disease.

Pay phones out of order SEMARANG: Nearly one out of every three pay phones in Semarang are out of order, largely as a result of vandalism. Didi Wargaprawira, head of the local branch of PT Telkom, said his office repairs each month roughly 700 of all the 2,118 pay phones installed in the city. "What is so sad is that the damage is largely caused by nasty hands, simply for the sake of destroying the phones," he said, adding that the repairs cost the company millions of rupiahs each month.
