Indonesia continues its losing streak

JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian team again failed to win in the second session after its 1-25 VP defeat by the Australian team in the 5th World Junior Bridge Team Championships in Kuta, Bali, on Sunday.

In the first session the host team also suffered a 1-25 VP total defeat by the Danish team, Antara reported from Bali yesterday.

In facing Australia in the second session, Indonesia will present the pairs Ananta Dapu/Jhon Tumwu and Agus Kus Triyanto/Taufik Nasution for the first 16 boards (half session). In the second half session Ananta and Jhon will be dropped and replaced by Djems Polii and Jemmy Boyoh.

In the first session on Sunday, the Indonesian team lost to the Australian team with a score of 2-64 IMP, then in the next half session, also with 16 boards, it surrendered with 10-68, or a 1-25 VP defeat.

The defeat of the young Indonesians was mainly caused by the blunder of Taufik Nasution and Agus Kus Triyanto on board two when they tried to play a small slam of six Spade contract. It went one down and had fatal consequences because the Australians reached a four Spade bid and won the game.

According to Indonesia's non-playing captain Edison Muntu, a similar error occurred with board 10. Australia played 3 NT and reached the game. The Indonesian players played 4 Spade and went down by one trick.

Indonesia will play host to the US-1 team on Monday morning in the third session.

Meanwhile, the World Bridge Federation (WBF) will for the first time in August 1995 hold an open world championship for pairs in Belgium, for which 150 pairs have already registered.

Roy E. Tirtadji of the Indonesian Bridge Association says Indonesia will send at least one pair to the championship.

WBF President Emiritus Jamie Ortiz-Patino said that South Africa has been chosen to organize the 1997 Bermuda Bowl team championships. The 1999 championships will be held in Bermuda to commemorate to 50th anniversary of the Bermuda Bowl. Ortiz-Patino has suggested that the Indonesian Bridge Association proposes to host the 2001 Bermuda Bowl to WBF after the current junior world championship in Bali.
