Coping with shortage The government deserves highly appreciative applause for its determination to resist strong demands from various groups to slap surcharges on the export of several industrial products whose prices have increased in recent weeks. It is encouraging to observe that the government, notably the ministries of industry, trade and finance, did not resort to ad hoc measures to cope with the price rises. That would have damaged the business climate in general.

Obituary
Obituary Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra, a well known figure in Indonesian art and cultural circles and two-time governor of Bali, died in Denpasar on Friday night. He was 67 years old. Antara reported that Mantra died one day after he was admitted to the Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar. He had been suffering from a chronic kidney disease. Mantra was governor of the province of Bali for two consecutive five-year terms, between 1978 and 1988.
